GOODBYE Y-2K
I can't believe the year 2000 is almost over and my computer is still going. However, some of you may not think so as I have done very little on the family research project this year. In fact, I have not published a newsletter since June. I have some photos, etc. of the reunion in July, which I will try to publish in the next newsletter. I have been rather busy lately and the year 2000 has gone rather quickly. It was my privilege to be Santa to over 100 boys and girls recently. This was a new experience for me, but one that I really enjoyed.

I realize that I have been very slow in producing the issues of the DEDMON CONNECTION. I wish I could tell you that I will do better in 2001, but I am afraid that will not be the case. I must be the world's greatest procrastinator. I guess I need to "practice what I preach". Please be patient with me and I will eventually get the publications finished... I still need articles and pictures from you to publish in future issues.

WEDDING BELLS FOR CARRIE JANE
The old courthouse in Buchannan, GA was the scene for the wedding of my grand daughter, Carrie Jane. Carrie is Gwen's only child. September 6, was the date of the event. Needless to say it brought tears to my eyes as I performed the ceremony. She married Doug Webb of Buchannan and of course will make that their place of residence. I baptized Doug's grandfather, Curlis Agan, several years ago while I was the preacher at Bremen, GA. Jane worked hard decorating the courthouse to make it a beautiful place for the wedding to take place. The picture to the left is of Carrie, me and Jane. I am the one in the black tuxedo.

REUNION-2000...... A GREAT SUCCESS

Hickory Grove Baptist church was the site for the reunion. The church is located in Houston Valley, Catoosa, County, GA. (near Ringgold) This is one of the areas the Dedmon family settled when leaveing North Carolina and coming to Georgia. Several family members then went on to Arkansas and eventually Oklahoma and points west. There was a great turn out for the reunion with folks from California, Arkansas, Florida, Alabama, Tennessee and Georgia. After lunch several of the "braver" souls journeyed to the site of the "Dedmon Cemetery". The cemetery is located at Taylor's Ridge, the final resting place for several of our ancestors. The unmarked graves and hard to read head stones makes it difficult to know who is actually in the graves. There is a list of all who are buried there and a few of the stones are readable. Along with the Dedmon's, there are several other families buried there. The Blacks and Dicksons are represented quite well at the Dedmon Cemetary.

DEDMON REUNION 2003
Our next reunion is tentatively set for June 7, 2003. However, this is subject to change, but we will keep you posted. The place has not been selected. Please communicate with me your suggestions and ideas for our next reunion. There is a family reunion held annually in North Carolina. I will try to get some information and pass that on.

Subject: Sarah Cavender
I am interested in Sarah Rebecca Cavender that you have on your web page. Do you know if she married a William T. Roberts in May 25 1857 in Carol Co. Ga. , Bryce L Hager. To see our line of Hager's click: here

Editor's note: I have a Sarah Rebecca Cavender but according to our research she was married to James A. (Jink) Thomason in 1859 and they had a son named Young Pinckney Thomason, who was born in 1869. She was born in 1842 and was only 17 at the time of her marriage. However, this is no proof that at the age of 15 she did not marry William Roberts. Does anyone have any information on this.
The Mississippi Dedmons

The Dedmons of Mississippi still remain a mystery to me for the most part. I do have some information from known relatives living in Mississippi.Katheryn Kellum Bentz, who lived in Missisippi at the time I talked to her, gave me some helpful information of the Dedmons who came from Georgia to Mississippi via Alabama. Most of these were the descendents of William James and John J. Dedmon. I believe if we could get more information from the present generation as to their grandfathers and great grandfathers we could connect the missing pieces. The following are inquiries I copied from Ancestry.com in hopes that it will "ring a bell" with some of you.

Date: 6 Jul 1999
I am looking for aynone who has information about Lucian Marion Dedmon. He is my great grandfather. He was born in 1894 and died in 1955 in Washington County, Mississippi. He married Hattie Miley. Melanie Dedmon

Date: 27 Dec 1999
My maternal Great-Grandfather was Frank Dedmon. He was the Sheriff of Sharkey County, MS. He died before I was born so that was before 1962. He married Amanda Louella Jones Kettleman. He died in Sharkey County, MS. He children were Ruby, Christine, Mabel, Willie (Female-my Grandmother), Ethel, R.E. (Female), and one son that I don't remember the name.Melanie Dedmon
Genealogical Humor:

The following conversation was overheard at a party attended by high society people: "My ancestry goes all the way back to Alexander the Great," said one lady. She then turned to a second lady and asked, "And how far does your family go back?" "I don't know," was the reply. "All of our records were lost in the Flood."

Genealogy:
  • Tracing yourself back to better people.
  • I trace my family history so I will know who to blame.
  • Can a first cousin, once removed, return?
  • Searching for lost relatives? Win the lottery!
  • Do I even WANT ancestors?
  • Every family tree has some sap in it.
  • Friends come and go, but relatives tend to accumulate.
  • Genealogists never die, they just lose their roots.
  • A haystack full of needles. It's the threads I need.
  • Where you confuse the dead and irritate the living.
  • I think my family tree is a few branches short of full bloom
  • Life is lived forwards, but understood backwards.
Heredity: Everyone believes in it until their children act like fools!
Theory of relativity: If you go back far enough, we're all related.
The concept of the "brotherhood of man" is a biblical concept. Despite the differences around the world, despite the different cultures, despite the different skin tones, we are all related. Paul said to the men of Athens: "And He has made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has determined their preappointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings, so that they should seek the Lord, in the hope that they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us; for in Him we live and move and have our being..." (Acts 17:26-28a). Why would Paul make such a statement? Perhaps to say that if you trace your ancestry back only to the time of Abraham, you live in a divided world because you are either a Jew or a Gentile. But, if you trace your ancestry back even further, we are once again united in the realization that we are part of one human family, created by God to be in fellowship with Him. Our realization of the brotherhood of man ultimately affects not only our relationship with one another, but our relationship with God as well. Have a great day!

From the Mail Bag....
Thanks so much for reminding about the newsletter. Its good to hear from you. We are all ok, I am having some back problems. My folks are still doing fairly well for being their age. I printed your newsletter for my dad. He enjoys reading them. I am sure that you have heard this many times before, but I really believe that we are related somehow. Your photo on the newsletter resembles my father so much. He has grey hair, mustache and glasses, and you all look like you are related. Hope your family are all ok. Talk to you later, Beth Dedmon Barker.

Dear Leroy, I haven't heard from you in sometime.....is there a new Dedmon newsletter available? I realize that you have conversed with some of my family and they told me that you had lost my e mail address.....hope to hear from you soon Gail M. Ford (Brenda Gail McSwain Ford)

I traveled to Camp Nelson National Cemetery on Friday last to attend a funeral of my cousins husband. Since the route took us thru Versailles we took the opportunity to stop in the Versailles Cemetery and check with the office there to try to locate some grave sites of my ancestors whom I knew were buried there. Very productive visit and the caretaker was most helpful. I was able to locate the sites of all the ones I knew about and , this is the real kicker, one that I had no record of at all. I had not seen his name in any of the census records or in any of the other sources I have looked at. Here is all I know at the moment. His headstone reads " Hawkins Dedman 1870-1907" and he is buried in the family lot alongside Robert E. Dedman 1835-1901, Sue Jelf Dedman 1835-1908, and Brother Philip Reif 1861-1903. There is also one unmarked grave in the lot and no record of the occupant is in the caretakers log book. I'm, of course, interested in both of these unknowns but particularly Hawkins since I have both a name and date to go on. If either of you can make any connection with this name please let me know. I now have site numbers for all the Dedmans buried in Versailles cemetery. Next time over there we will try to take photos of the headstones. Time and opportunity just didn't present itself on this visit. We also need to visit the Lexington Cemetery to locate some other Dedman sites which we know are there. Bill Beheler

NEWS FROM YORBA LINDA
Softball and Baseball season has officially started here in Yorba Linda. Kris is now playing for Esperanza High School Aztecs. She is a Freshman and playing Varsity. They just played in the Brea Olinda tournament. They haven't finished top three in 18 years and have never won it in the 20 years of its existance. But... welcome to a new era and millenium. Kristen Dedmon is in the house! Esperanza won! Kris pitched all four games. Had 48 strike outs in 29 innings and only 1 earned run. Not bad for this youngster! Let's not forget Corey Dedmon. This RHP 12 year old plays for the Cubs! He throws a mean 2 and 3 seamer and has his share of K's too! He is certainly fun watching. Lastly, he has a beautiful bat swing. Likes them high pitches but he knows exactly what to do with them... send them to the fence! Anyways, the Dedmon family is out at a ballpark 6 days out of the week and loving it! We're all having fun watching our kids grow up. Hello to all the Dedmon's in GA. Wish I could bring the kids to the reunion. I will definitely put in on my calendar! Oh and let's not forget our fearless leader. Jeff turned 40 this month! You should see him squirm in his seat when the kids are on the mound! Quite a funny sight to see! Hope to hear from you soon... (Ed. note: I hav received many letters regarding Jacob Wolfe. Most of these come from Melanie Malone. I am including several in this issue...)
This letter, I think, was written to Shirley Pitman. I am including it along with Shirley's response.

Hello, I'm Melanie and I'm researching Wolf, McEntire, Dedmon, Fortune, Grigg, Oates. Polly Dedmon was 4xgreatgrandmother who had a son named Jacob Wolf. The father is listed as unknown Wolf. Do you have any info? I don't think she was married to unknown Wolf, as I haven't found any marriage info. I know that sometime around 1806 she married a Horbert Procter and had another son named Mark Dedmon Procter. Her father was Mark Dedmon and mother was Hannah Bailey. I haven't done any research on bailey line yet, I wish I could answer your question. If you have any info I would be most appreciative. Were any of the Dedmon's Native American? Walk in Peace and Love, Melanie Malone
Hi Melanie, I see that we are related; Polly Dedmon's sister, Sarah "Sally," was my 3rd great grandmother. She married Abraham Padgett. She also named a son (Mark Dedmon Padgett) after her father, Mark Dedmon. I wish I could help with some info on Mr. (Unknown) Wolf, but I think that I must have the same information that you already have, which was taken from Mark Dedmon's Rev. War Pension Application. I do have a copy of the Pension Application which I ordered from the National Archives. I have not done any research into the Baily connection and really don't know exactly where to start. I have not found the names of any Baily's in the Rutherford/Cleveland County areas that would be of age to be Hannah's parents. I assume they must have remained in Rowan County, after Hanna and Mark moved to Rutherford (now Cleveland) County, but I have no absolute and proven data on her family, other than NC State Archives confirmation of Hanna's marriage to Mark Dedmon in 1785 in Rowan County. The bondsman for that marriage, along with Mark Dedmon, was "William Baily." It is certainly possible that this may have been Hanna's father, or at least a relative. Then, some years later, in 1802 in Rutherford County, NC, a "Samuel Bailey" witnessed the deed transfer of 50 acres of land from Mark Dedmon to William McKinnish. This "Samuel Bailey" could also have been a relative of Hanna's, but this is merely speculation on my part. I will hang onto your E-mail address and keep my eyes open for any clues to Mr. Wolf or the Baily's and I will let you know if I am able to turn up anything helpful to us. Before I go, have you checked out the DEDMON webpage of Rev. Leroy Dedmon of Georgia? The site address is http://www.dedmon.org/. He has a lot of really interesting information plus an on-line DEDMON family newsletter. I hope you will be very successful with your research. Your cousin and friend, Shirley Pittman

(The letter on the next page is from Lois Arthur. She includes a lot of information. I hope it helps.)

Melanie, I don't have any proof of a marriage between Polly Dedmon and Mr. Wolf. Since she was so young, at least 13, she may not have been married to him. She did marry Horbert Procter and they had two children, Mark G. Dedmon Proctor, born Aug 17, 1806. Polly would have been around 21. If she did marry Mr. Wolf, it wasn't for very long. The second child was Didamy Proctor, born Feb. 14, 1812. Both were born in Rutherford County, North Carolina. I'll bet that the confusion of the birth date of Jacob is because there were two Jacobs. Your date is probably the correct one. I would bet that Jacob's father was Indian. His name was probably "The Wolf" The surname, "Wolf" has its origins in Indian. The most abundant tribe in North Carolina in those days was Cherokee. Other Deadmans of this line did marry Cherokee and some had children out of wed lock by Cherokee partners. Below is the information I have about Mark Dedmon. More information will follow on another e-mail message because of the size factor. I don't want to load everything on one message. MARK DEDMON/DEADMAN Mark Deadman was born August 15, 1755 in Baltimore, Maryland. He died March 23, 1839 in Cleveland County, North Carolina. Another Poem from Tayna

CANDY
Born too soon. But never too late. Fighting and screaming. A miracle was made. Strawberries and vanilla. Swallowed up by a crib. Blue eyes that light the sky. A scared and delicate soul. A two pound baby, That the angels want to hold. They wanted her from the beginning. Over the years they let her know. Every day was a struggle. A moment of peace between tears. I'd hold her hand. She'd close her eyes. I'd give her a kiss. She'd try to smile. They would tug at her heart strings. I held her as long as I could. She's mine! She doesn't belong to you! Bring back her sight. Bring back her mind. Bring back her health. Bring back her life. Bring her back to me. To let us live the way It was meant to be. Today I can only see her face. In the tiny little frame. That sits on top of the piano. Wanting to come out to sit and play. Yesterday she sat there. Pounding notes that screamed She was alive. Tomorrow the notes will be silent. We won't hear music anymore. But when the sun goes down, And it starts to rain. I'll sit on the piano bench, And she will be there.
My mother Candy.... As sweet as her name.

I recently had the opportunity to review your file at Ancestry.com. I believe I may have more information for you regarding the marriage of Emma Dellinger and Samuel Leard Roberts. In addition to the child you have listed, Ezma Ethel Roberts, I believe he also had a son, Ivon Leard Roberts, born 9-22-98, died 1-69. Ivon was married and went on to have four children, three girls and a boy. Ivon is my husband's grandfather. I was doing some research on the name Leard and found your information which matches what I have for Ivon Leard's parents. If you are interested in having the names and dates for this branch of the family tree, please contact me and I will provide the information for you. Do you know how to get in touch with the Dedmons who would be my husband's cousins? We would like to get in touch with them, if possible. Thank you for your help and thank you for all of your hard work on the family tree so far. Kathy Roberts
Ed Note: Ezma Ethel Roberts was married to William Wray Dedmon
Sorry to be so long getting back to you. I received the Dedmon book from Danny and I have been busy loading and reloading the info. Now I have finished, out from under the snow, and got to play golf the last two days. Today it is in the 60's and is beautiful. After 4 weeks of snow on the ground I am glad to see the grass. Most snow at one time I believe we have had. Ws usually play golf about 45-50 weeks a year here. Maybe from now to years end we can. Now to the family. Do you have any info on my family; Dedmons, Martins, Bridges, Fosters, Wattersons, Griggs, Morrows etc? Can I do anything to help you? Please stay in touch. Thanks for contacting me. Larry D. Martin
Ed Note: Larry is a descentent of Hezekiah (Kiah) Dedmon, Sr. His great grandmother was Cecila Victoria Dedmon
Leroy, I found my family file the other day and can give you some specifics on Alfred and family I think. There are a few inaccuracies in the attachment. How can I best correct them? Will you be able to find the changes if I make them in capital letters? Judy
Ed Note: It was good to hear from Judy Dedmon Coyle again. She descends from Alfred Burton Dedmon, who was a half-brother to my grandfather.

KINSMAN
original poem by
Wayne Hand, 1999

Alas, my elusive kinsman,
You've led me quite a chase.
I thought I'd found your courthouse,
But the Yankees burned the place.
You always kept your bags packed,
Although you had no fame,
And just for the fun of it,
Twice you changed your name.
You never owed any man,
Or at least I found no bills.
In spite of eleven offspring,
You never left a will.
They say our name's from Europe,
Came state side on a ship.
Either they lost the passenger list,
Or great granddad gave them the slip.
I'm the only one looking,
Another searcher I can't find.
I pray (maybe that's his fathers name)
As I go out of my mind.
They said you had a headstone,
In a shady plot.
I've been there twenty times,
And can't even find the lot.
You never wrote a letter,
Your Bible we can't find.
It's probably in some attic,
Out of sight and out of mind.
You first married a .... Smith,
And just to set the tone.
The other four were Sarah's,
And everyone a Jones.
You cost me two fortunes,
One of which I did not have.
My wife, my house and Fido,
God, how I miss that yellow lab.
But somewhere you slipped up,
Ole Boy, Somewhere you left a track.
And if I don't find you this year,
Well .... Next year I'll be back!

Ed Note: I enjoyed this poem, so I am passing it on to you. The email of the sender of this poem is Ktdidyvgs@aol.com, but I don't remember who this is...
